K-ON! movie scores big at Japan’s Academy Awards

If you have never heard of K-ON! before, I hesitate to say to you if you missed out big on this one, or if you should praise yourself lucky you didn’t. The animated movie produced by Kyoto Animation / TBS TV / Pony Canyon & Movic, just stirred up the rankings again,.. yes, AGAIN..
The movie, based on a slice-of-life type of anime covering the high school lives of 5 girls who decide (or get dragged into) forming a light music band, tips the moeblob scale again. For those of you not familiar with the word “moeblob”, in essence it’s a rating given to cuteness of a series/movie, depending on the main characters featured in this particular animation, we can say K-ON! is probably one of Japan’s top ranked moeblob series. Selling thousands of fangoods every month, a franchise worth millions of Yen.
So, to the point: K-ON! The Movie has been given the “Best picture animation” during the 35th Japan Academy Award ceremony (Japan’s domestic version). As our newssource SC quotes: “this is still being hailed as quite the accomplishment, the most prestigious prize any moeblob anime is ever likely to get.”.
In other K-on! related news: The film grossed almost 15 million dollars (1.14 billion yen) in its first month, being seen by over a million people (or possibly a much lower number considering the propensity of otaku to make multiple visits), all quite unheard of for a late night anime.
