Sony unveils a new 55” OLED TV at CES

Sony unveils a new 55” OLED TV at CES

It’s been a while since we did not heard about SONY and its OLED TVs, and despite what many have believed, Sony is still working on making it possible and proved it once more today at CES by introducing a nice 55” Crystal LED Prototype just for us!
Being a prototype Sony did not say much, however, they did claim that this prototype delivers a contrast 3.5 times higher than any LCDs, a color gamut 1.4 times higher as well as being also 10 times faster than your good old LCD TV!

This is an LED TV (each sub-pixel is a non organic LED) not an OLED TV!

    Cheers,

Bump, this should be corrected ASAP. This isn’t a OLED TV like the ones that LG and Samsung showed. Just to clarify on the terminology, this is a proper LED TV as maxime has described unlike the current ones on the market which has an LCD panel on the top.

Too bad the photo is in low quality and super compressed!

While this display had greater color saturation (greater, not necessarily better; it wasn’t calibrated, after all), and superior contrast to the Sony LCD next to it, it also had a fascinating, albeit small amount of dither going on around the edges of objects. Not immediately noticeable from an average viewing distance, but once I noticed it, I couldn’t stop seeing it. No doubt buggy software failing to handle addressing and finite power management for sub-pixel LEDs. Will be very promising if they can get that—and the insanely high cost—resolved. All that aside, I’m not at all sure this method can ever be more cost-effective than OLED, which is seeing significant (to manufacturers, that is) year-to-year drops in production costs.

sony ditchs oled for the crystal led, where the lcd panel are replaced by tiny leds, 2 millions of ‘em (in the 1080p version)

    • Jerold Chan

There are actually over 6 million LEDs in the panel: 1920 x 1080 x 3 for each RGB sub-pixel per pixel which comes out to 6,220,800 LEDs.

    Is not a OLED tv!

This is a LED-TV – not OLED-TV. Come on guys, fix the headline.
