Tokyo University of Technology Introduces the PVCT (Integrated Presentation Recording System)

The Media Department at Tokyo Institute of Technology is developing a video production system for presentations, called PVCT. This recording system can automatically combine projectors used in lectures with several kinds of content on one screen, including photos and computer graphics.
“This system is based on recording computer screen shots. Previously, systems like this recorded only the lecturer’s talk. But as you can see from the projector, this system merges pictures of the lecturer and PowerPoint slides in the image from the projector. Until now, the lecturer was a long way from the PowerPoint images, so he or she had to use a laser pointer. But now, the slides are merged into the picture, so the lecturer can point to text or write on the PowerPoint slides while talking. We think this system makes it easier for lecturers to explain what they’re talking about.”
PVCT also uses 3D compression technology from Lattice Technology to display 3D pictures smoothly. The video is high-definition, at 1,600 x 800 pixels. The recorded data is also compressed, enabling up to 9 hours of recording on DVD.
“Nowadays, information about new products arrives by e-mail, but I think there may be a steady shift to video. If information is in video form, pictures explaining the product concept on the Web will be very helpful. I think this will make it possible to create very attractive content.”
