Facebook releases standalone Messenger app for Android and iOS

If you’re a heavy texter, it seems like Facebook now has its sights on you! Let’s face it, most of the big companies that have their own apps, have their own messaging service. For example, Google has Google Talk and Huddle, when iOS 5 launches this fall, Apple is making their own messaging app between all iOS devices called iMessage, BlackBerry has BlackBerry Messenger and Facebook has Facebook Chat.

Up until today Facebook Chat was only available through your computer, it also recently got integrated with Skype, and it is available in Facebook’s apps for iOS and Android (excluding the iPad, which no official app). Now big blue took things a bit further separating the mobile experience by creating a standalone messaging app for iOS and Android called Facebook Messenger.

The new app lets you instantly send messages directly to individual friends or groups, which you can also share your location, and attach photos to your messages.

You don’t need to see all those FarmVille requests all the time, right? If this is just what you’ve been waiting for to ditch your traditional texting app and to be connected to hundreds or thousands of friends instantly, check out Facebook Messenger in the Android Market or App Store now.
