Highly Accurate Visualization of Radio Wave Arrival Directionsby KDDI R&D Labs

At Wireless Technology Park 2011, KDDI R&D Labs revealed for the first time a system which makes the direction radio waves are coming from visible.

This system includes a 9-element array antenna, 8 cameras, a GPS, and an electronic gyroscope, and can overlay the direction radio waves are coming from on a display. It is used as a tool to design cells that are within range to receive radio waves from base stations.

“We usually use array antenna technology to estimate the horizontal direction. This is unique in that we can now use calibration table technology to estimate the vertical direction.”

“Mobile phone cells have been designed as a planar system. Recently, femtocells and picocells are introduced, and they are designed stereoscopically. That’s why we think this kind of system is necessary.”

“Theoretically, it can catch radio waves from a mobile phone. So, one possible application for this system would be to locate a mobile phone that you had dropped and did not know the location.”

Estimation accuracy for both the horizontal and elevation directions is about one degree today. KDDI R&D Labs will continue to make improvements on downsizing, aiming for commercialization.
